2008 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year, the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) awards several gifts to graduating high school seniors recognized as outstanding students as follows:

  • Several one-time awards of $1,000.
  • The three top award winners will also receive an additional $1,000 per year for up to an additional three years, if they maintain eligibility, and a “signing incentive” if following undergraduate graduation, the student is employed by DoD or USCG.
  • One award recipient will also be recommended to our national organization for consideration for an additional $2,000 Scholarship.

The award is to be used in attaining educational goals.  Winners will be recognized by the Society at a luncheon and presentation ceremony in April/May 2008.  Checks will be mailed, in August 2008, directly to the undergraduate institution chosen by the award recipient.

Please advise graduating high school seniors of this program and make copies of the enclosed application as necessary.  There is no limit to the number of applications received from any one high school as long as the applicants meet the criteria.  If you have further questions regarding our program please contact me by e-mail or phone me at the number below.

PURPOSE:  To recognize outstanding graduating high school seniors for their past achievement and aid them in accomplishing their career goals.

AWARDS:  Each award is a gift of $1,000 to be used in attaining educational goals.  Winners will be recognized by the Society at a luncheon and presentation ceremony.  In past years the Washington Chapter of ASMC has made up to ten awards each year.  One award recipient will be recommended to the national organization for consideration for a $2,000 Scholarship.  The top three award winners, if they maintain eligibility, will also receive $1,000 per year for up to three additional years, if they maintain their eligibility, and a “signing incentive” if following undergraduate graduation, the student is employed by DoD or USCG. 

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARDApplicants must be outstanding graduating high school seniors who intend to continue their education.  They must be entering a field of study related to financial operations; e.g., business administration, economics, public administration, operations research, accounting, finance or other related field.  Items that will be considered in the evaluation process are:  scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities and leadership roles in those activities, and career goals.  Students that are selected as recipients of the award that are also awarded full scholarships by the institution they decide to attend, will be recognized for their outstanding achievement, but will no longer be eligible to receive the scholarship portion of the award.  Parental or guardian membership in ASMC is not required.

APPLICATION PROCEDURESApplications will be accepted from students attending Virginia, Maryland or Washington, D.C. high schools.  Any number of qualified students may apply from one school.  Applications postmarked after the deadline will not be considered and will not be returned.  The attached ASMC application form must be completed and submitted with; (1) three letters of recommendation, (2) an official transcript and (3), a copy of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores.  No applications will be returned.

CEREMONIES AND PUBLICITY: Winning students will be notified in March 2008, and recognized by the Washington Chapter of ASMC at a luncheon meeting in April or May.  The awards presentation will be publicized at luncheon meetings, in newsletters and in the “Armed Forces Comptroller.”  A check will be mailed to the school designated by each of the winning students in August 2008.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2008.

2007 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MILITARY COMPTROLLER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

For 2007 we are awarding seven $1,000 college scholarships to graduating High School seniors entering a field of study related to financial operations.  Winners were selected based on their Scholastic Achievements, Leadership Ability, participation in Extracurricular Activities, and career goals.

The three top award winners (Mr Pujanauski, Ms Plangetis, and Mr Goyal) will also receive similar amounts each year for up to four years and a $1,500 "signing incentive" if following graduation if they are employed by DoD or USCG. [They must apply and be accepted for employment; this is neither an offer nor a guarantee of employment.] An additional $1,500 will be provided after completing six months of satisfactory employment.
