Captain Michael S. Murphy

Program Manager, Sea Warrior (PMW 240)

 

As program manager for the Sea Warrior Program, Captain Murphy has responsibility for delivering integrated IT solutions in support of the Navy's Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education initiatives.  A native of Denver, he graduated from the University of Rochester, New York in December 1984 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Music Performance.

Following commissioning and completion of flight school, Captain Murphy reported to VA-42 for initial training in the   A-6 Intruder.  In his follow-on assignment to the “Fighting Tigers” of VA-65 he completed two cruises, embarking in USS Coral Sea (CV 43) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).  During the latter deployment, he earned designation as Airwing Strike Leader and served as acting Airwing Landing Signal Officer during Operation Desert Storm in the Arabian Gulf.

Captain Murphy next received orders to the USN Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland.  After completion of training, he was ordered to VX-5 in China Lake, California, where he was All Weather Attack Branch Head, overseeing operational test and evaluation of numerous weapon systems prior to their fleet introduction.  Subsequent tours took him overseas to the staff of Commander Sixth Fleet, as Assistant Air Operations Officer and later Flag Lieutenant; to the Pentagon where he served as Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (N8); and to Weapons Test Squadron China Lake where he served as acting Chief Test Pilot as well as Deputy Project Director for the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW).

In 2001 he was assigned as the Deputy Director, System Verification and Test for the Joint Strike Fighter program, where he was responsible for all verification activities on the nation’s largest acquisition program, including leadership of a $1 billion-plus flight test program.  As one of two naval officers selected to the Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellows Program for 2004-2005, he was assigned to the Hewlett-Packard Company, Customer Solutions Group in Washington DC. 

Captain Murphy served as the inaugural Director of Operations and acting Chief Information Officer for the Business Transformation Agency, responsible for the integration of business transformation activity across the Department of Defense.  His most recent assignment was to the Director, Acquisition Resources and Analysis, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (AT&L).

His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, one individual and three strike/flight Air Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, seven Navy Commendation Medals (three with combat “V”), the Navy Achievement Medal, and numerous unit and campaign awards.  He has accumulated nearly 2000 flight hours in over 30 different aircraft.

Captain Murphy is married to the former Sherry Anne Martin of Woburn, Massachusetts.  They reside in Clifton, Virginia with their children Sarah, Brian, Brendan, Molly, and Kathleen.
