Brigadier General David H. BergerBrigadier General Berger currently serves as the Director of Operations at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

Commissioned in 1981 following graduation from Tulane University, his first assignment was with 3d Battalion, 7th Marines where he served as a Platoon Commander and Assistant Battalion Operations Officer. After two overseas deployments, he was transferred to Roanoke, Virginia to serve as the Officer Selection Officer.

Following graduation from the US Army Infantry Officer Advance Course in Fort Benning, Georgia, he reported in to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Marine Division, where he served first as a Company Commander and then as the Battalion Operations Officer during Operation DESERT STORM. Following his tour at Camp Lejeune he was reassigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) in Yuma, Arizona where he served as an Instructor and Branch Head.

While attending the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, he was selected to attend the Marine Corps School of Advanced Warfare. Upon graduation, he was ordered to Okinawa in June 1996, where he served with III MEF Special Operations Training Group and then III MEF G-3 Current Operations. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel during his Okinawa tour, in 1999 he was reassigned to the Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington, DC.

Brigadier General Berger served on the Joint Staff as a policy planner in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate, J-5, from 1999 until he assumed command of 3d Battalion, 8th Marines in July 2002. He commanded 3d Battalion, 8th Marines from July 2002 to July 2004, deploying his Battalion first to Okinawa and then to Haiti for Operation SECURE TOMORROW in early 2004. Following command of 3/8, Brigadier General Berger attended Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC as a Marine Corps Fellow.

In August 2005 he assumed command of Regimental Combat Team 8 in Fallujah, Iraq. For 12 months the Regiment conducted continuous combat operations in the eastern portion of al An bar Province, as part of the 2d Marine Division. He continued in command of 8th Marines until June 2007, then served as Assistant Division Commander for 2d Marine Division until June 2008. From June 2008 to June 2009 he served as Chief of Staff for KFOR Headquarters in Kosovo.

In addition to a B.S. in Engineering, he holds a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University and a M.S. in Military Studies. His formal military education includes the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Advanced Course, U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College and U.S. Marine Corps School of Advanced Warfighting. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School and U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Reconnaissance School.

Brigadier General Berger is married and the Berger's have four sons.
